BCAA’s are Branched Chain Amino Acids. Amino acids are the organic compounds that join together and create strands of proteins that make up the cells of your muscles, skin, organs, and vital body parts. They are necessary to carry out all actions and reactions in your body and keep all of your body’s systems running optimally. BCAA’s are specifically comprised of Leucine, Iso-Leucine, and Valine and make up approximately 35% of your skeletal muscle and surrounding muscles.


BCAA’s are essential amino acids that must be ingested or supplemented and promote muscular growth and recovery. During physical activity BCAA’s act as a fuel source and help in recovery by rebuilding muscle.


Most amino acids are broken down and delivered to the body via the liver. BCAA’s have the unique ability to “skip” the liver and go directly to the muscles and can be used to fuel, build, or repair muscles. Muscle tissues are comprised of protein, which is comprised of amino acids. Amino acids are “strung” together to build or repair proteins making muscles bigger and stronger. Leucine, especially when used in specific ratios with Iso-Leucine and Valine, is key in stimulating muscular growth. Leucine promotes protein synthesis, boosts insulin levels, lowers cortisol levels, boosts growth hormone production, delays fatigue and burns fat.
During physical activity the neurotransmitter “serotonin” signals to the brain that the body is fatigued and tired. Tryptophan another amino acid that is known for making us “sleep” is delivered to the body on the same channel as Valine. By introducing Valine into your routine, less tryptophan enters the system delaying fatigue. Because these amino acids act as neurotransmitters, the additional Valine also works to provide sharper mental acuity.


Twice as Much Muscle
“2009 Annual Meeting of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found that trained lifters taking a BCAA supplement around workouts for 8 weeks gained about twice as much muscle and strength as those taking a whey protein shake without additional BCAAs.”
 Delayed On-set Muscle Fatigue with BCAA’s
“The BCAAs themselves contribute directly to muscle hypertrophy and recovery. In a 2010 study published in the “International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism” it was shown that BCAA supplementation reduced delayed-onset muscle soreness. For endurance athletes, BCAA supplementation has been shown to increase the lactate threshold, or point at which exercise stops using your oxygen systems as a primary source of fuel. A 2009 study in the “Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology” displayed an increase in endurance exercise capacity following BCAA supplementation.”

Live Longer with BCAA’s?

“BCAAs have also recently been found to aid in a different type of endurance: life span. Researchers from Milan, Italy discovered that mice supplemented with BCAAs in their drinking water had higher amounts of mitochondria in their muscles, higher activity of the longevity gene, SIRT1, and lived 12 percent longer than those not getting BCAA-enriched water. So supplementing with BCAAs daily can keep you in the race longer in addition to making you stronger.”

Burn Fat with BCAA’s

“A study out of Brazil found that Leucine supplementation for six weeks caused a large drop in body fat. The researchers proposed that the increase in protein synthesis stimulated by Leucine increased energy expenditure so much that it helped to burn off body fat. Leucine has also been found to reduce hunger, causing you to eat less while you burn more, which ultimately leads to fat-loss.

In the most recent study on BCAAs fat-loss effects, Japanese researchers discovered that mice given isoleucine while eating a high-fat diet gained significantly less fat than mice not getting supplemental isoleucine. This was due to isoleucine’s ability to activate special receptors, known as PPAR, that increase fat-burning and inhibit fat storage.”
